What to Do in Times of Emergency Furnace Breakdown
Accidents can happen, and sometimes your heater may break down unexpectedly. If this happens, it’s important to stay cool and collected. You can always call our team of experts for assistance, but in the meantime, here are a few tips on what to do:
1) Check the thermostat.
Most of the time, a simple adjustment to the thermostat can fix the problem. If your heater won’t turn on, make sure that it is set to “heat” mode and not “cool” or “off.” You should also check that the temperature is set higher than the current room temperature.
You can also try changing the batteries in your thermostat. If it’s a digital model, a low battery can sometimes cause the heater to malfunction.
2) Check the pilot light
Your furnace has a pilot light that serves as the ignition for the burner. If this light goes out, the burner won’t turn on and your furnace won’t produce any heat. If your pilot light is out, you can try relighting it yourself.
First, locate the pilot light assembly on your furnace. Then, turn the knob to “off” and wait a few minutes before turning it back to “pilot.” Once the pilot light is lit, turn the knob to “on” and see if your furnace kicks on.
If you can’t seem to get the pilot light lit or keep it lit, call our heating experts for assistance. We will be happy to come to take a look and help.
3) Check the circuit breaker
If your furnace won’t turn on, it could be a problem with the electrical supply. First, check to see if the switch for your furnace is turned on at the circuit breaker box. If it’s off, flip the switch to the “on” position and wait a few minutes to see if your furnace kicks on.
It’s also possible that the fuse for your furnace has blown. If this is the case, you will need to replace the fuse before your furnace will work again.
4) Clean or replace air filters
If your furnace suddenly stops working, one of the first things you should check is the air filter. A dirty or clogged air filter can restrict air flow and cause your furnace to overheat. This can lead to a complete shutdown of your system.
To clean the air filter, simply remove it from the furnace and vacuum any dirt or debris that has accumulated. If the filter is damaged or excessively dirty, you will need to replace it with a new one.
